Professional Development – A Better Approach?
We will get our audience to do, as we show and tell, before reviewing and asking along the way. We will not only help people understand the nuances of critical (modern) learning research specific to Interleaving, Spaced Repetition, the Cognitive Science of learning, Varied Instruction, Generative learning, and Desirable Difficulties, but we will practice these methods at the same time.
Hubris
I’ve worked with a lot of schools in my time. Some were progressive and poised to innovate. Many plodded along, hoping that they didn’t mess something up to such an extreme that would lose students. And a few have been dysfunctional (at best) if not just plain troubling.
Grow Up and Knock It Off!
Higher education is broken. I’ve talked to educators and administrators from the most famous institutions on the planet. All of them have horror stories of how impossible it is to overcome the baggage, the traditions, the paradigm that is higher education. Not the Ivy Leagues, not the most innovative community colleges and not even the for-profits who were designed to do exactly that. The system is broken and at this point it’s hard to find anyone or any way to fix it.
